Visit to the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in Kenya
On the 24th of June 2022, some of the participants of the 6th cohort of the Africa Project Finance Progam had the priviledge of meeting the team from the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) led by the Acting Director of Programmes & Project Development, Eng. Michael Njonge at their office in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Authority was established in 2017 through an Executive Order through Legal Notice No.18, with the main mandate of overseeing the establishment of an integrated, efficient, effective and sustainable public transport system within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. The expanded metropolitan area is made up of Kajiado, Kiambu, Machakos, Murang’a and Nairobi City counties.
NaMATA plans to implement mass transport solutions along five corridors of the metropolitan area. During the meeting, the participants were able to understand the conceptualization, structuring, financing, implementation and operation strategies that the authority has adopted for the pioneer Bus Rapid Transport Project currently being constructed along the Thika Road in Nairobi.
Additionally, the authority briefed the participants on the future project pipeline and the rationale behind the prioritization of the different projects.
The visit is part of the curriculum of the training program aimed at reinforcing the understanding of the participants of the key concepts in infrastructure financing and development.
